A madly methodical man
Stands on two feet
Below him the plans that have been carefully
Mapped, for years, years on years
During those years
Not much has changed
But time has chased
Him away to a new place
New space between him
And those he loves
A space that has separated
What used to be
Two boys in a pool
So small, so new
In a world that is so cruel
But it connected us
Like the bricks
On an unfinished basement floor
Where the clock ticks
But hours don’t exist
Oh, all the places we’d explore
We had traveled shore to shore
Many times, in our minds
Walls didn’t exist, neither did time
A backyard is a battlefield
Behind the shed a mine
Where you can find rocks of any kind
And shovels can make a city
Engineered completely in your mind
Barely understood
But I thought I could
And what I saw should
Be documented, as a story
To be told
Of a boy who at 3 years old
Could ride a bike
Because the sound that metal makes
On the concrete creates
An urge to make a change
To balance, and squeeze the brakes
Just right
For a smoother, quieter ride
That genius that we know
Continues to grow
Into a man, much stronger than before
Not just in how he appears
But in the will power between his ears
21, a milestone for most
That marks the beginning of a habit
A habit that becomes a storm
That follows wherever you go
But for him
21 is just another year
Another year to tame your fear
And become stronger, smarter, better
Than what you were last year
My shadow
Now follows at my side
I used to lead you
Looking down at you behind
Now I can’t
Because when you stand
Your eyes meet mine
At some point in time
The road begins to split
I go somewhere new
Create new footprints
Nobody follows
Just me, no you
But far away
In a different lane
You continue to succeed
Playing your own game
No need to follow
No need to be the same
Cuz you never have been
And you always live up to your name
As you chase
Every dream you want to attain.
